Chelley Black will also share her ideas for the 2012 Secret Santa Swap.

CATHEDRAL WINDOWS WORKSHOP

Instructor: Jan Smith

The classic Cathedral Windows block is well-loved by modern quilters due to the striking, bold geometric pattern it creates. Join instructor Jan Smith as she shares her knowledge and skill in creating this block, both by hand and machine. The goal for the class will be to make an eight square sample which will result in 10 complete windows and 12 half windows.

Fabric Supply List:

1 yard background fabric ( "frame")
1/4 yard for windows (all the same or mixture)
Cotton thread for piecing and turning "frame"
Thread for the "frame" should match it
If a warmer quilt is wanted, add 1/4 yard of batting.


General Class Supplies
1. Sewing Machine-in good working order, new needle, ¼” foot, walking foot & all-purpose foot
2. Thread and bobbins
3. Fabric for class project
4. 6” x 12” ruler
5. Rotary cutter – new blade and cutting mat
6. General sewing supplies

August Meeting - Service Project Sewing Part II

Please come out and join us for a fun day of sewing. Once again, we will be working on our service projects, so the more, the merrier. Feel free to bring a friend. This event won't count toward the one event maximum for guests, so this is a great chance to get to know our members and consider a membership for yourself. You can learn more about our service projects here.

SQUARE IN A SQUARE TECHNIQUE WORKSHOP

Instructor: Kay Roberts

This is a technique class based on the Square in a Square® piecing technique.  This method is created by sewing strips to squares and using the technique ruler to do the trimming to make it look like we cut triangles.  We do not cut triangles!  There are several options to the technique. You will be amazed at how versatile the SnS® technique can be.  We will be making Options 1-9 and learn to use the ruler to get the effects we want from the options.  I want to help you to achieve understanding and knowledge that can be put to use in using this method of quilting.  This is “the way quilting was meant to be,” fast, fun and fabulous!  Come and have fun!

Fabric and Cutting Supply List:  - Pre-cut prior to workshop
10-3” light colored squares
8- 1 ¾” dark strips (selvage to selvage)
4 – 2 ¼” light strips (selvage to selvage)
2-3” dark strips

Bring extra fabric in case we need to cut more strips.  The strips don’t all have to be the same fabric, just have lights and darks.  You can use shorter strips but bring enough to meet the fabric requirement.

General Class Supplies

3. Fabric for class project
4. 6” x 12” ruler
5. Rotary cutter – new blade and cutting mat
6. Glue Stick – 12 sheets plain white paper
7. General sewing supplies
8. All other necessary items to insure your comfort
9. *Square in a Square® ruler and any of the Square in a Square® books, particularly The Advancing on II book.
10. Cost of books and rulers:  Rulers - $29.95;Advancing On II book-$29.95
• I will be bringing several rulers for you to use during the workshop, I want you to try this technique to see if you like it before you commit to buying the ruler.
• Square in a Square® rulers and books will be available to purchase at the workshop.

I will be showing  quilts using the Square in a Square® technique.  Come and have fun and enjoy learning a new technique and Never Cut Another Triangle!

Introduction to Pattern Writing & Publishing
presented by Kathy Skomp of

Kathy grew up in a fabric store and upholstery/drapery workroom, often picking up scraps off the work room floor and making small purses to sell at school.  After 15 years of teaching middle school math, she opened a quilt shop.  After being in business a couple of years, she decided to venture into the design world, writing her first book, "Sweet and Simple".  She only printed 100 copies afraid they would not sell.  The books sold out in a few days during a shop hop, so she decided she would print more and continue her design work.  She has since closed her shop, and is now a sales rep for Moda Fabrics.  She has published 6 books and many patterns and hopes to continue designing.

A few words from Kathy on the workshop:

I will be doing an introduction to pattern design and publication.  Getting started may be easier than you think.  You can do much of the work for yourself and save a lot on costs, but there are a few places to rely on the experts for help.  I will let you know what I have learned through the years.

After months of planning, it's finally here, our service project sewing day! We need all hands on deck, so please be sure to join us for what will be a fun day. Volunteers are needed. If you know anyone who would be willing to come out and join us for the day, we would love to have them. Sewing skills not necessary.

We will be documenting the day for a feature in an upcoming issue of Generation Q Magazine, so come prepared to have your photo taken. This is a great opportunity for our guild and the organizations we support with our service projects!

Thanks to the incredibly generous donation from Ann Kelle Designs, The Quilting Squares and individual members, we have very few fabric needs. We do need quilting cotton prints suitable for baby boys, and we will always take other cotton fabric donations as well. There is still a need for fiberfill. In order to maintain a consistency with the finished pillows, and provide for easier storage, please only purchase 5 pound boxes of Morning Glory Premium Polyester Fiberfill (available here). Please note that all donated items must be in new, unwashed condition from a smoke-free environment.
