March 19 Meeting Reminder

This month we're having a Quilt as You Go tutorial being lead by member Marcia Reel. Here's what Marcia has explained thus far:

 Preparation for March: pictured below is an example of a pillow panel we will be doing utilizing a very simple "quilt as you go" method. Choose the size pillow you want to make, and bring a piece of batting (cotton works great) cut about an inch or two bigger on each side. I will be doing a 16" square, so my batting will be 18". I will bring lots of colorful scraps you can utilize for your pillow or you can bring your own. If you would like to completely finish your pillow at the meeting, bring a piece of fabric cut the size of your pillow and an invisible zipper at least the width of your pillow. I can show you how to insert. Make sure you throw in your zipper foot! Can't wait to see what all you creative people make!

You'll need your sewing machine, scrap fabric, batting about 2 inches bigger than you want your pillow to finish, if you're going to finish your pillow off also bring a zipper (as noted, the width of your pillow) and your zipper foot, as well as a piece of fabric cut to the size of your pillow.

January 16 2016 Meeting

Happy New Year everyone!

A new year means new meetings!  Get ready for our January meeting on Saturday the 16th at 10am.  We're having an open sew, so feel free to bring anything you'd like to have a few hours to work on.  However, we'd like to encourage everyone who hasn't already made one to make a quilted name tag.  Here is a blog post with a tutorial by member Jayne Willis on how to make a Polaroid Block, which is popular for these "teeny tiny quilts."  As our guild grows and grows, it'll help everyone remember every member's name.  It's tricky if you only see each other maybe once a month!  We're also hosting a "yard sale" so if you have any sewy items that you feel like it's time to part ways with, feel free to bring them along.

A new year also means...membership dues!  If you haven't already, please click here to head over to the membership tab and scroll down to the bottom until you see the "Buy Now" button.  There you'll be directed to PayPal where you can pay your dues, OR if you'd like you can bring a check to this month's meeting.

• Show and Tell - Anything you've finished and want to share!
• Extension cord/ Power strip (Just in case, you may be able to share with someone else)
• Extra sewy items for the yard sale!

September Meeting

This month we're having a Pre-Cut sit and sew.  Bring in a pre-cut pattern to work on, either printed or digital, we won't judge!

For inspiration try searching The Moda Bake Shop or Fat Quarter Shop's free pattern section.

A pre-cut pattern is one that takes advantage of pre cut fabrics, such as fat quarters, charm packs, mini charms, layer cakes, or jelly rolls.

Feel free to bring in any size project you'd like to work on, and we'll see you Saturday!

Shop Hop!

Can you believe we've never done a guild shop hop?!  Me either!  Well that's all going to change this month!  We're going on an all day quilter's dream of a shop hop!

July 18th our guild members will have a day full of going to a variety of shops around the Middle Tennessee area and shopping and having fun all day!  Maybe filling out stashes to the brim?  Maybe, but probably not.  There's always room for more fabric! 

I'll take one of each please!

SHOW & TELL

Linda Cunningham shared an baby quilt with appliqued frogs and cattails in beautiful blues and greens.

Stephanie Williams shared a quilt top using the Norway pattern and Bonnie and Camille fabric.  Update on Granny B's - they are now a Janome dealer in addition to longarm rental.

Mimi Shimp shared a beautiful floral applique quilt block she is going to frame.  She also shared Moonlit Flowers quilt in gorgeous gold, red, green and black applique.  Mimi shared quilt blocks from the Sensational Sampler pattern.  Showing how you can update an older pattern with modern fabrics.

Jennifer Hastonshared her LOVE quilt in process. Working on completing the quilting.  She also brought in a large applique project of Dolly Parton for a friend.

Sharon Hels shared what she learned for the Creative Walking foot Craftsy Class.  She used the wavy stitch on her Log Cabin quilt top.  Sharon is also completing hand quilting on a shibori dyed project.

Tori Grant shared her quilted name tag - very cute and personal!  She brought in her COMPLETED Bionic Gear Bag! 

Jayne Willis shared several items. A batik jelly roll strip quilt in plum, pink and purple.  She also brought in Vice Versa BOM from Genex Quilters using her hand dyed fabric in aqua, plum and gold.  Jayne free motioned quilted it.  She also brought in her COMPLETED Bionic Gear Bag using Tula Pink fabric.

Kathy Lasko - Shared a 16 patch quilt that was machine quilted and bound.  She also shared a sweet baby quilt in bright wonky stars.

Jennifer Haston  shared her progress on her LOVE quilt and the appliques that has been added.

Katie Dornan shared a cross stitch project - Autumn Sampler.

Ashley Gomez also shared a cross stitch project - a Thomas Edison quote.

Tori Grant shared a quilt she made for her daughter - Dandelion in white, blues and yellow.

Stephanie Williams shared her experience at Granny B's Longarm Quilting Class.  She also brought in her Count Down to Christmas quilt top using FQ, jelly roll and solid.  Stephanie also shared her Christmas Ornament quilt top.

Linda Cunningham shared her hand pieced and hand quilted project using multi-color batiks charm squares.  She also brought in a Halloween Quilt utilizing HST and Breast Cancer Quilt with a center medallion surrounded by HST..

Jenny Parker shared a baby quilt using Jayne Willis' pattern in pinks.  Guess it's for a girl!

Jayne Willis shared a HST quilt she referred to as her "Cluster" quilt using her hand dyed fabrics and shot cotton.  She also shared a purse that she made.

Marcia Reel shared a bag she constructed to help test patterns.  She also participates in a Bag of the Month group and brought in her project in grey with magnetic closure.

Sharon Hels shared her shibori dyed fabric table runner with echo hand quilting.

General Discussion:

Jenny reviewed our remaining calendar events for 2014.
October is our planning meeting and requested everyone bring 2 or 3 ideas.
November is our charity sew date where we will construct blankets varying in size and NICU smocks for the Vanderbilt Childrens Hospital. Encouraging everyone to invite a friend.
December is our Holiday Party with the Secret Santa Swap, Dirty Santa and pot luck luncheon.  We will also hold elections.

Everyone shared their hand dyed fabric we did at last month's meeting.  Beautiful color range.

Stefanie Williams shared Cherrios Quilt she made for a raffle for a sick child, a baby quilt finishing with scrappy binding and a swoon mini block she made into a pin cushion.

Linda Cunningham shared two Halloween quilt tops she is quilting.

Jayne Willis shared a lap quilt made with her hand dyed fabrics and shot cottons in blues and greens.

Betty Camfield shared her Michael Miller challenge with greay background and a cat zipper pouch from Straight Stitch Nation and patten tested a tolietry kit pattern.

Jennifer Haston shared the center block that she is constructing for a friend.  The center block is pink and red spelling out LOVE.  You will find flying geese and a landscape bottom.

Debby Lee had lots to share with her Pixalated heart in grey and blue batiks with a red square. She is planning on doing linear quilting.  She also brought an Irish table runner with a multi-color heart flower shape with a grey background. Debby also brought in her Mug Rug Exchange - Teal for Two.

Royce Vaughan shared a flower made with fabric dye pens. Her online quilt group made her a memory quilt with some of her favorite things. She also brought in the quilt our guild made for her as a rememberance of her husband.

Tori Grant shared a needle holder with tiny patchwork and a needlework kit.

Lindsay Connor is a busy girl.  She shared a strip piecing project that is a work in process. She is also working on patterns for a co-authored book, On the Go Bags.

LaTanya Channel shared a minky pieced quilt top in brown, mint and aqua and a quilt block she is working on, Modified Churn Dash and some Nine Patch blocks.

August 15 2014 Meeting

General Discussion

Brief meeting to remind members to complete their surveys for the Secret Santa Swap.  Great attendance for our Fabric Dying class conducted by Jayne Willis and her daughter. 

There is much to learn about fabric dying and the Guild is most thankful that Jayne and her daughter for sharing their talents and home with us.

July 19 2014 Meeting

General Discussion:

Jenny brought up Nashville's upcoming Art Walk and was in contact with Nancy from the Fabric Studio.  She was interested in displaying 10 - 15 quilts for the Art Walk.  It is held the first Saturday of each month.

Chelly Black is handling the sign ups and match ups for our Christmas Secret Santa Swap.  Please complete the survey by first week of September if you are interested in participating this year.  Chelly will try to have the Secret Santa assignments by October.

Our guild now has its own calling cards.  Each member is asked to post and distribute all over town.  Thanks you Stefanie for handling this for the Guild!

Michael Miller Challenge

Linda Cunningham brought her chevron pieced wall hanging using grey as her background.
Jayne Willis made an adorable pillow with a paper pieced hedgehog.
Katie Dornan constructed a mini quilt utilizing flying geese.
Ashley Gomez made rectangle style pillow focusing on the aqua tones.
Jenny Parker made a baby quilt using the square in a square pattern and lime green is her background.

Other Show and Tell by Stefanie Williams made a baby quilt using the Swoon Block and Jayne Willis also brought in two wall hangings, one in reds and the other in blues.  It was quilted using her walking foot.

Next meeting: August 16 - Fabric Dying at Jayne Willis' home.

June 21 2014 Meeting

General Discussion:

New member: Kate Dornan

9 Members were present at the June Meeting. Hand Quilting was taught by Linda Cunningham.

Discussion of the May meeting (Nicu Smocks): The smocks were in various stages of completion and 44 smocks were given to the hospital. Callie was presented with a certificate for the guilds efforts.

Prorating member dues- Jenny to get Stephanie’s thoughts. Part of the discussion will be to find out if the MQG’s dues are part of the prorating.

Cumberland Valley Quilt Association – (CVQA), meets on 2^nd Tuesday of the month during the day would like to know if our members would be interested in an exchange program. Do you have any ideas, and/or interests.

Show and Tell:

Christine Copenhaver showed her talents, she made several headbands for the Tomato Festival. Her book “Necktie Quilts” is on Amazon for pre-order. She showed the members the mockup of the cover. Very Nice.

Lindsey Conner, and Ashley Gomez are also talented members of the guild. Lindsey is a freelancer and Ashley has a shop on Etsy.

Upcoming Events:

July – will be an “Open Sew” this would be a good opportunity to finish up the “Challenge” for the MQG that is to be presented to MQG on the 25^th.

August – Jayne Willis, to demonstrate “Hand Dying” materials required and directions house to follow.

September – “Open Sew”

October – “Planning for the upcoming year 2015” Jenny would like the members to present at least 3 ideas to choose from.

December – “Holiday Party” will be a Pot Luck the 2^nd Saturday of the month. Dirty/Secret Santa, it’s so much more fun when everyone participates. We have so many talented members. Chelley will you coordinate the event? 

April 2014 Meeting

Our April Meeting was brought to order by President Jenny Parker.
- Linda Cunningham is compiling a current membership spreadsheet to post.  She confirmed our meeting room rent is paid through June.

- Checking to see if we may use the Barr Conference Room for our May meeting.

- Jenny Parker received our Modern Quilt Guild Pins and Membership Cards and distributed during meeting.

- Our Facebook Members Only group has 15 current members.

- With utilizing the Facebook site, Stefanie Williams will remove the Guild website.  Our Music City Modern Quilters Guild Blog will remain with some tabs hidden.

- Jenny Parker handed out fat eights packages for the Michael Miller challenge.  She has enough for a couple more if there is anyone interested. 

Requirements:
1. Item can be any style, design, size
2. Item must be quilted
3. May use Michael Miller complimentary fabrics (cotton couture solids, prints, etc.)
4. Photo of project uploaded to Modern Quilters Guild site.

- Callie Tinney discussed next month's Charity Sew - NICU smocks for the Vanderbilt Childern's Hospital.  Motion was made by Trudy Jackson to purchase an Accu-Quilt custom template for easier cutting. Sharon Hels second and Stefanie Williams third. Motion carried. Linda and Stefanie to work out the ordering and shipping details.  Stefanie plans to pre-cut several smocks prior to May's meeting.  Jenny has several door prizes for our meeting.  Watch for updates on Facebook supply needs and pack a lunch!

- Jenny was able to participate in the Sew Down Friday close and pack up day.  She met with marketing and publicity personnel and gained a bit more knowledge with our national group.  They donated a large cutting mat for the guild.

- Linda Cunningham will go over guidelines at our next meeting for our June Handquilting Class she is teaching.

SHOW & TELL

Royce Vaughan brought in several books and a paper piecing template for anyone that wanted.  Jenny will start building a library with some of these.  Royce also shared a children's book that she illustrated.  Such a talent!

Royce shared a lap quilt in gray, black, yellow and cream.  She declared the quilt did not have a front or back.  She quilted it with feathers of all sizes.  Great first attempt!


Sharon Hels brought in a photo of a hexi machine piecing project.  Very interesting!

You missed out on the fun by creating a lady bug paper piecing.  This was a quick project that you could complete the block at our meeting.  We made all sizes from 2" to 8" and we even had a Yoda project in the mix. So many different versions and all looked great!  Thanks Kathy for the expert instruction and patience!

March 15, 2014 Meeting

General Discussion:
The Sew Down is in Nashville, April 11 - 14. Jenny to reconnect to see if any volunteer positions available for our guild to participate.

Jenny is waiting on fabric to arrive for those of us that signed up for the Michael Miller challenge.

More hotels have been added for 2015 Quilt Con February 19 - 22, 2015 in Austin Texas.

We should be receiving Modern Quilt Guild Member Cards and pins soon.

Chelly Black confirmed monthly room rental for our meetings is paid through March.

Our next Guild meeting is April 19 and is our Charity Sew.  All members and visitors are needed for this event.  We make NICU smocks and blankets for the Vanderbilt NICU.  Please bring your sewing machine with needle and thread.  We will publish a list of supplies that we can share and you will be able to sign up to bring (i.e. iron, ironing board, extension cord, cutting mat, etc.)

SHOW & TELL

Ashley Gomez shared her pieced quilt top made from Bluebird Park fabrics and her one of 8 quilted bags she made.  This purple pleaser was quilted using the stippling technique she learned in February's Stippling class.

 

Linda Cunningham, today's hand piecing teacher, shared a hand pieced star pattern table runner that was hand quilted too.

Linda also brought in a Log Cabin lap quilt that was quilted with interlocking circles using a coffee can for the quilting pattern.

Stefanie Williams shared a different sort of quilting pattern.  A stitch along from Little Miss Shabby (#quilty stitches).  She publishes a cross stitch quilt block every two weeks that you complete in the colors of your choice.

Jayne Willis is featured in Fresh Quilts quarterly publication.  The article is Modern Quilt Movement on page 108 of the Spring edition featuring pillows she made.

Jayne brought in a quilt she made from her own hand dyed fabric. Gorgeous colors and design!

Jayne also made a baby quilt from one of Lindsay Connor's patterns using pieced binding.

Lindsay Connor and Elliott, (all of 9 1/2 weeks old!)

shared a quilt from a charity Quilt Bee in vibrant pinks and yellows with white shashing using her January pattern from her book, Modern Bee.

Also from her book, Lindsay used the February block, Playing Cards using blues, greens, orange and pinks with an ivory background.

Lindsay made a Clam Shell pattern baby quilt she had professionally quilted.  Each shell shows different quilting design.

 

 

January 18, 2014 Meeting

Our January meeting was called to order and we introduced ourselves to each other since we had 3 new visitors.

- Callie Tenny spoke briefly about our charity sew for the Vanderbilts NICU. Disscussion about whether to purchase an ACCUQUILT template for the smocks. Our cost would be approximately $125. It is tabled at this time.

- Discussed February's meeting - Free Motion Quilting

Bring 12 X 12 muslin squares (w/batting) or a larger lap project to work on.

- Discussed our 2013 Sew Red for Women BOM project. Need to assemble blocks and quilt. Jenny offered to assist.

- 2014 Dues are due - $40 - pay Linda Cunningham - a portion goes directly to the National Modern Quilt Guild.

Callie Tenny & Luke shared a baby quilt and chevron quilt squares.  So glad both of you could visit.

 

 

Jayne Willis shared her hand dyed table runner.  Really looking forward to Jayne's fabric dying class!

Angela Miller - shared the 5 minute and 10 minute block from the Missouri Quilt Co. and her bag with an argyle pattern.

 

Elizabeth Johnson - shared her chevron quilt top made for a friend and some of her pinwheel blocks. Love the colors Elizabeth chose.

 

Ashley Gomez - shared her quilted bag from Missouri Star Quilt Co. and her stripe and block colorful quilt top.

 

Christine - shared many of her projects with silk neck ties and felted wool. Here are just a couple of the projects she shared.

November 16, 2013 Meeting

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Remember that our December meeting, the Holiday Luncheon, will be held on December 14th at 10:00 AM.

• As it gets closer, there will be a signup for sweet and savory finger foods.
• Dirty Santa Swap - Bring wrapped gifts: one yard or two 1/2 yards of fabric, or a charm pack.
• Swap Exchange - If you participated in the swap, make sure to bring your creations for the big reveal!

Dues for next year will be $40 ($25 for our guild, $15 for MQG)

We voted for our 2014 officers and will be announcing the results in the near future.

SHOW AND TELL

Royce is so amazingly creative.  She inspires us all with her whimsical free-style approach to creating.  The first three pieces are about the size of place mats and the two bottom pieces are postcard quilts.  Studying her work is like going on a scavenger hunt.  In fact, see how many of these things you can find:  stones, metal, wire, interesting fabric textures that she has created, old watch parts, polymer clay pieces, and last but not least, parts of Stefanie's old screen door.  Royce told us that she trades fabric with the wife of a watch repair guy who sends her all the old watch parts that would've gone into the trash.

Trudy made this scrumptious chenille scarf out of four layers of fabric.  You can use a cutter like this to make all those tiny cuts.  The foot keeps you from cutting through your bottom layer.

Ashley, our newest member, made this super hero quilt for a friend's son.  He's going to love cuddling up in this, with its lofty batting and minky backing.

This is Stefanie's version of the Dilly Dally Pattern by Thimble Blossoms.  She used Vanessa Christenson's Simply Style fabric line.  This sounds cheesy but it's true, Stefanie does not dilly dally when it comes to cranking out quilts.

Jayne is making a set of place mats for a friend.  At first glance it looks like she found a great wavy print.  On closer inspection you can see that each color is a different fabric and that she sewed all those wavy pieces together.

This is the wallet that Jenny made for a swap friend.  She used this wallet pattern by Oliver + S.  What a lucky swap friend to receive such a cute wallet!
